Accessibility
Most of the people this site is for are over 55. Some are reading on a phone, in a hurry, after something frightening has happened. If the site is hard to use, it has failed at the only thing it exists to do.
What we aim for
We build to WCAG 2.2 Level AA, and go past it where the audience makes it worth doing. We are not certified against it, and this page is not a claim of full conformance — it is a statement of the target, how we check, and where we currently fall short.
- Body text is set at 18px with generous line spacing and a controlled line length.
- Color contrast is measured, not eyeballed. Main text on the light ground measures about 12:1 against a 4.5:1 requirement, and the lowest-contrast text we use measures about 7:1.
- Interactive targets aim for the 44×44px enhanced size rather than the 24×24px minimum, because a smaller target is harder to hit with an unsteady hand.
- The site works without JavaScript. Nothing you need is behind a script.
- Every page can be navigated by keyboard, with a visible focus outline and a skip link.
- Motion is reduced automatically if your device asks for that.
- Pages print legibly, because some people prefer to read on paper.
How we check
Every page is generated by the same code, so a fix reaches all of them at once. Before a change goes out, an automated pass measures contrast on the rendered pages at phone and desktop widths and checks heading structure, image alternatives and page titles. That pass discovers the page list from the built site rather than a hand-kept list, so a new page is covered the day it exists.
Automated checks find some problems and miss others. They cannot tell whether a sentence is confusing, whether an instruction makes sense when you are panicking, or whether a screen reader announces something in a sensible order.
What we know falls short
Stating this is the point of the page.
- We have not tested with real screen-reader users. The markup is structured for it, but structure is not the same as a person confirming it works.
- We have not tested with people over 55 outside our own review. The typography and target sizes are built to published guidance, not to observed use.
- The evidence pages are long. They are grouped by chapter and the detailed notes collapse, but they remain dense by nature.
- Video captions are burned into the picture rather than supplied as a separate track the player can restyle. That suits a muted phone viewer and does not suit someone who needs to change caption size or color.
Tell us
If something here does not work for you, write to service@decoysignal.com and say what you were trying to do and what happened. You do not need to know the technical name for the problem.
We answer accessibility reports the same way we answer corrections: within seven days, and we will tell you what we are going to do rather than only that we received it.
